Presentation: Patssi Valdez

The art presentation that stood out to me was the presentation of Patssi Valdez’s work. Besides the fact that Valdez is an East Los Angeles College Alum just like myself, her art aesthetic is one that I personally enjoyed above the rest. Before the presentation, I knew a little bit about the artist because she has had her art on display at the Vincent Price Art Museum, located on the ELAC campus.
From the presentation I learned that Valdez started her art career during the Chicano/a movement of the 1970-80’s, and also about her association with the activist ASCO art collective. Valdez’ art is inspired by her personal experiences, and a lot of the imagery in her work serve metaphorical purpose. From the images in the presentation, it seems like a very common theme in her work is the use of home related objects as well plants and greenery, as can be seen in Enchanted Garden. From this, it appears that the imagery in her paintings aim to give the viewer a glimpse into chicano culture and community through the artist's eyes. Elaborating further, many of the environments in her paintings depict real or imaginary scenes that are symbolic of her personal feelings and also meaningful to her Chicano experience.  Lastly, one of the other things that stands out in Valdez's  art is her use of color, much of the artist’s work is very colorful and seems to serves the purpose of possibly adding intensity the viewers perspective.
