Week 7: Margarita Cabrera

For my Artist presentation, I will be investigating the art and life of Margarita Cabrera who was born in Monterrey, Mexico and moved to the US at about 10 years old with her family. Above all, her work and life experiences have lead her to being a sculptor and installation artist, with works centering around the largely political topics of consumerism, migration, labor, among many others. In researching Cabrera’s craft, I loved the finding that the issues she finds important are not only reflected in the external, observable component of her art, but her methods of sculpting and crafting interweave cultural practices as well. For example, in her installation Space in Between of a life-sized sculpture of nopales, the cactus is made out of border patrol uniforms and sewn and embroidered by immigrant workers. On the surface, Cabrera’s art is extremely pleasant to look, but when you delve into how they’re made, even more stories are told.
