Hovhannisyan, Gagik (Week 8: Presentations)

Hey guys, I just wanna start off by saying that all of the presenters did a really great job!  I really enjoyed the presentations.  It was really nice to learn about Chicanx artists/activist who are doing a lot for the community, but do not have much recognition for that.  Although all of them were special, but the one that really stood out to me was Harlow's presentation on Mel "Melo" Dominguez.  It is nice to know that the artist is from Glendale, CA because I live there too!  Her story is really inspirational!  After finding out about her disease, instead of losing spirit or motivation, she instead started to do some good work for the community.  She decided to give the remaining of her life to her community which is something that not everyone would do.  Many people would instead go out and try to enjoy their remaining life and worry about themselves.  What she did was really an act of selflessness.  The art piece that really stood out to me was the "Nuestra Raices" one because it really contained a lot of details that told a story about Mexican culture.  The Mariachis, the dances, the farmers and Mayans.  Mexicans are really known for their great music and beautiful dances.  It is also worthwhile to mention that Mexico is the number one supplier of agricultural goods to the U.S., like fruits, vegetables, snacks, and etc.  The other art piece about another big aspect of Chicano culture was the Dia de los Muertos one.  This is a really big holiday for Mexicans and it also has spread through the U.S.  People that day gather and honor their loved ones who died by ringing things that they loved.  They believe that the souls and spirits of the dead come together on that day and they kinda give them pleasure.
