After visiting Xandra Ibarra's website, the work that stood out to me was her "Free to Those Who Deserve It", because the piece truly resonates with you. It seems that the artpiece is attempting to use symbolism to speak about the sexual pleasure from torture. The base is what holds the person, or in actuality the penis, up, meanwhile the locks, needles, and the bottom contraption are in a sense squeezing it into place. There are so many things stuck into the person that the pain is visible. Whether it be the lock, the numerous piercings, or the giant need pierced through the middle, there is no denying that the subject is in pain. Even the placement of the subject speaks volumes. It is not upright, but rather more in a flopped position-- perhaps symbolizing this state of vulnerability. I think that I would like to ask her of her audience for this particular piece. Who was she trying to speak to? How does it relate to her? How did she come up with such a symbolic and captivating piece?
The second piece of work that stood out to me was "She's on the Rag", a print made out of the artist's menstrual emissions. My reasoning for choosing to speak about this piece is because it is such a taboo topic in this day in age to speak about menstruation, especially in specific cultural and religious beliefs. I was a little confused after watching her explanation for her print, I believe it was abstract art, and the medium was made to speak to us, but perhaps there is a little more. I would ask her to explain her meaning behind the analysis, and to explain what she sees when she sees this print.
