I would love to ask her how her family originally reacted to her work and how they currently feel about her work. That's because these are subject matters that are often shunned away and refused to even be acknowledged within the Latino community. It would also be nice to hear her advice on how to deal with the backlash from this work since I am certain lots of people might say horrible things about it. I still find it difficult to make artwork surrounding queer identities for fear of how my own family might react to my work.
I don't know what I was expecting to find when I googled Xandra Ibarra, but it was definitely not this. When entering her website, I randomly clicked on Free To Those Who Deserve It (2020) and gasped at the sight of a dick covered in piercings. That was really exciting to watch and read. I absolutely love the quote found over the image that explains how human flesh is as tough as nails, yet our brains scream at any sight of discomfort. As her brain is screaming she says " Fuck off as I play cupid to my stupid lovesick dick, each fiery pinprick another shot of adrenalin coursing through the veins of my porcupine pal, thick and purple, bobbing in from me like a festive party balloon just begging to be popped". That is some hardcore dedication that I heavily appreciate. I love it when an artist shows no hesitation with their work and just goes for it. After this, I reacted to her sculpture piece Thank You, It’s Versayce (2018), and while this one was not as provocative, I still found it exciting. It was fun to look through the objects to find items I might recognize.
