Orozco, Emily

Previously, I had never heard of Xandra Ibarra. I was completely unfamiliar with her work. However, as I began to read about her and see her work, I can honestly say I’ve never seen anything like it. I think one of the things that makes her so different is her alias “La Chica Boom.” I also think that her being a community organizer also makes her very different in comparison to other artists, she’s an activist and her work contributes to feminist, anti-rape, and prison abolition movements. Seeing that her work incorporates several types of media such as videos, sculptures, and more it was difficult to select which of her pieces to talk about. Ultimately, I chose one from her “The Hook Up/Displacement/Barhopping/Drama Tour.” I chose this one:

I chose this one just because I recognize a lot of these words and they are usually seen as "vulgar." I think that without reading the back story of the images that go with this one there is so much left to unpack. It seems humorous in a way but I would like to know more about it on a serious level. I think my question about this piece would just be "Can you explain it more in detail?" just because I feel like I don't fully understand it and I really want to.
