Sanchez, Cassandra - Nancy Pili (week 8)

The artist’s presentations this past week were incredible! I love seeing artworks that create a public dialogue and leave us craving for more. The artist that really caught my attention this past week was Nancy Pili, the artist presented by Ana de la Rosa.

This particular artist caught my attention because she is an artivist who took part in hanging the ‘Resist’ banner behind the White House as a form of protest against government policies. The banner, hung on the 25th of January in 2017, was a message to the people against the policies and beliefs that the artists believed the Trump Administration would instill during his term. This piece inspired me to continue rejecting the Trump Administration and fight for change. Nancy Pili, along with 6 other activists, were arrested for their protest. However, later on she was given an award by the city, on her work with the banner, showing how absurd it was to have arrested her in the first place.

Little did I know that artist Nancy Pili was a part of this piece, much less know that her work speaks for many in her community. One of the pieces that really spoke to me, during Ana’s presentation, was the piece on the garage door that read “Not for Sale.” Real Estate has taken advantage of many minorities for the use of property to “build better;” however, in this particular piece, Nancy Pili defends an old woman who was taken advantage of by selling her property at an unfair price, unknowingly. So the piece reflecrs this sentiment of unfairly evicting the people and families who live in this home. Ana also mentions that when the families are finally evicted, the prople who lived there left their handprint on the garage door in a different color, to show all the people who once lived there
