Class presentations went very well last week as I got to enjoy what my classmates had to say about their artist and reflect on what that does for the Chicanx community. One artist’s work in particular was Brenda Barrios, presented by Armando Perez.
There are many reasons why Barrios and her work caught my eye. First, it was hearing about her background as she’s a fellow Bruin, handling school and still being able to create her art pieces was absolutely incredible to hear. Being a student artist is always impressive to me because I get to see it as inspiration to create art as well. Also, I really liked the points Armando made in the presentation such as why Barrios chose vibrant colors to represent the colors she always seen in Mexico. That sounded very thoughtful and humble to me because one’s native land is always to sacred to their hearts and used as motivation for their artwork.
The art pieces themselves appear as very simplistic, vibrant, and each display a message. I see that as very young and amateur-like in the best ways. I really like how my generation create art in abstract ways in their choices of style and colors. I believe Barrios’ art pieces represent a part of her and her connection to her communities such as the essential workers that get overlooked.
Another point I noticed was the increase of digital art and flyers to spread art, as we talked about last week.
