Santillan Olmos, Crystal (Week 6: Xandra Ibarra)

After browsing through Xandra Ibarra’s website, it was quite shocking but satisfying to see her type of art come to the public’s eyes. It is clear to call her an artist that is also a purposeful Chicana activist that uses her artwork to make statements. One exhibition in specific, “She’s on the Rag” called to my eye instantly. As a woman who experiences the menstrual cycle, I always have kept that part of me hidden especially as I grew up in a Mexican household. It was always my brothers and my dad who told me to hide the bloody tissue paper or pads in the trash cans. I was raised to be ashamed of what my body did.

Once I saw this art piece from Ibarra, I instantly felt like I was seeing something that I shouldn't see. However, it did later make me feel comforted because I was seeing something that most woman go through.

Some questions I would have for Ibarra:

Have you ever thought twice before exhibiting this art piece?

As a Chicana artist, have you every recieved hate from your family specifically?

What has motivated you to keep creating these types of artworks?
