Howdy, everyone, I want to, first of all, thank everyone for presenting their artists. I love that we were able to learn about so many cool and amazing Chicana artists and look forward to hearing about more in the upcoming weeks. It was hard to choose an artist to reflect on since they were all so talented and lovely, but I decided to reflect on Rob Harlow's presentation on Mel "Melo" Dominguez. It was truly inspiring to see her work "Nuestra Raices”. What did it for me was seeing all the ways in which the chicane identity and story are told. As a child of Mexican immigrant parents, I was able to relate a lot to this piece. I could see my tios working in the field, my aunts dancing, and of course, the wall slicing our family in half. Such a heartbreakingly powerful image, with tons of small details and references.
This is the blog for the UCLA Chicanx Latinx Art and Artists course offered by the Cesar E. Chavez Department of Chicanx Central American Studies (CCAS M175, also Art M184 and World Arts and Cultures M128). This course provides a historical and contemporary overview of Chicanx Latinx art production with an emphasis on painting, photography, prints, murals and activist art.
