The artist who
was presented in class that stood out to me the most is Laura Aguilar. Not only
are Laura’s images very unique and not something you see everyday, but also her
mentality as an artist is very expressive and personal. While watching the
video of Laura as well as viewing her work, I was first shocked to see what I
was looking it, since you do not see artists like her everyday, portraying
their naked bodies in deserted areas. It was interesting to hear about Laura’s
intentions and ideas about her work and how she focuses on all types of women,
which includes women of color, lesbians, and of size. Laura also focuses on the
perception of her own body, which she is strongly confident about and not
afraid to express herself as who she is as a woman.
Through her
images, Laura expresses how women should be accepted no matter what size they
and reevaluates what is beautiful or acceptable as a woman. One of Laura’s
images that I found interesting is shown with herself sitting in front of a
rock, slouched over, with her back facing us. I believe that through this image,
she is exemplifying herself as one with nature and almost mimicking the rock in
an artistic way. It is interesting to see how Laura creates images with nature,
which can express a lot just by looking at the image. Overall, Laura is a very
unique artist who is very different from all the other artists I have come
across, and the message she is sending through her work s one that I strongly
admire.
