Garcia, Brandon

Hello everyone,

My name is Brandon Garcia and my preferred pronouns are he/him/his. I am a third-year majoring in Psychobiology and minoring in Chicano studies. I am interested in attending medical school to be able to provide healthcare services to my hometown in South Los Angeles, Huntington Park.  The last time I took an Art class was back in 9th grade, I unfortunately have ZERO artistic skills, but I hope to acquire some by the end of this quarter. My intention in taking this course is to explore and appreciate art more and use this time to help me de-stress.
The first class lecture was very  thought provoking, the unfortunate reality that many of the artists that people typically recognize  are white males. However, as we saw on Tuesday, collectively as a class we were able to name approximately 57 female artists.  I am really looking forward to what Prof. Lopez has in store for all of us and can’t wait to learn about Chicana Artists.

With regards to this week’s reading, I was able to deeply resonate with Prof. Lopez's essay It’s not about the Santa in My Fe, but the Santa Fe in My Santa because the image of La Virgen de Guadalupe is actively present in my life as it surrounds the interior walls of every household in my neighborhood.  What was an eye-opening moment during my reading quest, was the discovery about how much I was able to relate to the essay. My passion and commitment to my religion has allowed me to get through tough times and help me in making the right decisions. This essay allowed me to recollect a bad memory but also acknowledge and value the beauty of La Virgen de Guadalupe. During one encounter a white peer made fun of my little sister for carrying an image of La Virgen de Guadalupe on her binder and insulted the image by indicating the colors were not beautiful and the color of La Virgen de Guadalupe was too dark. As Prof. Lopez also indicates in her essay, I concur that her rose-colored floral dress and floral arrangements are beautiful and are a good cultural concept representation.
