Pineda Gracie

Hi everyone,
My name is Gracie, I’m a transfer from East Los Angeles College and 4th year Psychology major graduating this June. I don’t really have any specific research interests at the moment, but I am currently a research assistant in a research center at the Semel Institute. This is my second time taking a class with Prof. Lopez and I’m sure this will be as fun and interesting as the first.

In regard to the articles, I thought the Nochlin article was interesting and made certain points that stood out to me. This article asked the question of “why there have there been no great women artists?”. The author made the of point of stating that there wasn’t any female equivalent to many of the greats like Michelangelo, and Rembrandt, amongst others. That in itself made me think about my own consumption of art, and it surprised me that many of my favorite artists are indeed men. It wasn’t something that I actually thought about, I guess in a sense I innately and inaccurately accepted that art is a male dominated field, and I didn’t really think beyond that or question why that was. In hindsight it all makes sense, women have not always had the same opportunities and encouragement as men, and obviously opportunities for advancement are scarcer for women of color. Prior to reading this article I never took into account the artistic achievements of women, and I feel like reading this article has in some way positively altered my perception of creators of art, and has encouraged me to actively seek out female artists.
