Hi, my name is Ryan Love. I am a transfer student from Santiago Canyon College. I am currently majoring in Biochemistry and hoping to work in a lab engineering biofuels or forensic pathology. However, if both of these plans do not work out for me I would be content becoming a lab technician for any company that will hire me.
I have taken only one intro art class at my community college, which was about 4 years ago, so I don't remember much about art and artists but I do remember how much I enjoyed that class which is why I thought this class would be interesting to take.
As for the readings...starting with "Why Have There Been No Great Women Artists" by Linda Nochlin, the main idea and furthermore the title of why have there been no great women artists, has never crossed my mind once. However, after reading this short essay I have come to the realization that there is a serious problem in the art industry and it has been like that for hundreds of years and I admire the fight for women to be recognized for their art just as males are all over the world.
One part of this short essay that caught my attention the most was the story of Rosa Bonheur. I found it very courageous yet unfortunate that she had to cut her hair and play the male part because of the specific demands of her profession. In my opinion, I don't think that humans should have to play any gender role just to work in their desired profession.
Also in the short essay by Sybil Venegas, I find it interesting that it wasn't until the numbers of educated professional Chicanas increased that the Chicano community accepted the emergence of Chicana artists. Additionally, I wonder what was turning the point in 70's that allowed Chicana artists to be recognized and why couldn't it have happened earlier.
