Presentation: Camille Rose Garcia

The whole list of Chicanx artists that Professor Lopez provided us with was filled with a bunch of talented and unique artists, but one specific artist caught my eye, Camille Rose Garcia. I had never heard of her before, but her artwork has completely mesmerized me. Just by google searching her name and clicking images a lot of her artwork appears. Her artwork has a creepy look to it, but it is also very beautiful. Her artwork is filled with tons of color and you can tell that she has a theme in what she does.

Camille Rose Garcia was born here in Los Angeles in the year 1970. She grew up in Orange County and was raised by her father, a Mexican activist filmmaker, and her mother, an artist.  Growing up in Orange County she visited Disneyland a lot, and the influence of Disney characters appear heavily in her artwork. I also grew up in Orange County, and everything Disney always catches my eye, so this made her artwork stand out to me even more. She would also attend punk shows when she was younger, which has influenced her art as well. Instead of the Disney characters looking very traditional and friendly, she puts her own twist to them by “punkifying” and making them look more “creepy”. Her artwork is also influenced by William Burroughs’ work. Garcia’s artwork is very unique, and she takes a lot of influence from the life she lived growing up. Garcia’s artwork has been presented in magazines and museums, such as the Rolling Stone magazine and the Los Angeles County Museum.
