Kristy Sandoval is a 35-year-old Chicana muralist who works
out of the San Fernando Valley. Sandoval was born in Los Angeles, and graduated from
the Academy of Arts in San Francisco with a degree in architecture.
Sandoval wanted her work to have an effect on
onlookers and felt that murals were the ideal platform. Therefore, she decided
to give back to her community and began working as a community organizer, art
education advocate, and muralist.
Sandoval has been commissioned to work in Los
Angeles, New York, San Fernando Valley, and internationally. In 2016, she was
awarded the “Phenomenal Woman Award” from California State University,
Northridge.
In 2015 Sandoval was invited to partake in Mural Istanbul
Festival making her the first female artist commissioned. She worked alongside
female refugees from Syria, and used her art to empower women. She stated that
working abroad taught her the power of art and its ability to serve as a
universal language to bring positive energy to communities.
Like many
Chicana artist, Sandoval uses her art as a form of social commentary.
Sandoval feels art allows for individual
expression, and she uses her art to raise awareness for issues faced by minority groups.
