Presentation: Laura Molina

The artist I decided to write about is Laura Molina, who self-proclaims herself as “The Angriest Woman in the World.” She was raised in the suburbs of Los Angeles in the San Gabriel Valley, but she currently resides on the edge of the Mojave Desert which is where she draws inspiration. She studied in numerous places such as the California Institute of the Arts and the Art Center College of Design. Molina worked as a scenic artist in motion pictures, televisions, music videos and theme parks. A lot of her art pieces are reactions to images she sees in popular media. For example, she published two comic books, one called Cihualyaomiquiz the Jaguar which was a reaction to “California’s Proposition 187.” Molina once said that she will use her “activism and creativity to end racism, sexism, and patriarchy at both a social and international level.”
When I first looked at her artwork, I immediately noticed that she focused a lot of issues that are relevant to society and that is why I decided to focus on her. One of the pieces that stood out to me the most was “Amor Alien” which shows Laura as a green-skinned, indigenous resident of a fictional planet with a white male who is portrayed as Dave. He is supposed to be the alien but, in this case, he doesn’t even think of her as being human. She says that nothing exists until a White man sees it, which relates to when Columbus “discovered” America.
