Reflection Post

When I first enrolled into the course, I was really looking forward to further my knowledge on Chicanx women artists. As a Chicanx Studies double major, I wanted to learn more about who are/were the various women who have provided empowerment to the community. As the course progressed, I was quite interested how much effort Chicanas had to put into work in order for them to be recognized as artists within the Chicano Movement. Moreover, I also learn how Chicanas use painting as a source to provide empowerment to their community, but to also resist oppression and assimilation. I enjoyed learning about many Chicanx women and how they use painting to give their community a voice.

One of the artist that stood out to me the most was Carmen Lomas Garza. I have to admit, before this class I was not quite interested in art because I always felt that I never found a connection with the artist and their paintings. However, when we read about Carmen Lomas Garza and I learned about her artwork that portrayed cultural, familial, and community practices of the Latin community, I felt a strong connection with her art work. My favorite piece was Sandia and I will never forget the connection I felt when looking at this image for the first time. It was then that I finally felt a close connection to an artist through her artwork. Not only that, but I was also fascinated by all the Chicanas that we learned everyday during class and our class presentations.

Moreover, I really enjoyed coming to this class and learning about many influential women in the Chicanx history, but also learning the basics steps to drawing. I would totally recommend this class to other students, and I also look forward into taking another class with professor Lopez. Thank you all for a great experience. Good luck to everyone with finals.

I also agree that i enjoyed learning about many influential women such as Carmen Lomas Garza and I would defiantly recommend this class to others.

  2. Jackie,
I also really enjoyed Carmen Lomas Garza's work. I felt they were relatable and it got me thinking about my own memories. I realized how similar many of our experiences were. It was amazing seeing them brought to life in such a lively manner.
