When I heard about this class, I was really looking forward
to being introduced to more Chicana artists, and art in the United States in
general. As an international student coming from an Asian country, I wasn’t
that exposed to the culture in the United States. Throughout this quarter, I
was introduced to different Chicana artists almost every week, especially
during the presentation week.
Before taking this class, I had no idea that the Spanish
community living in the United States were unfairly discriminated. However, I
then learnt the effort made by various Chicanx artists as a community that has
a successful progress. Then, it reminded me of the discrimination against the
Chinese minority living in Indonesia.
Out of all the artists that I have learnt in this class, I think that one that I really loved was Celia Munoz. Not only are her artworks unique, they also convey strong messages. Her paintings and media installations may seem simple at first, but when you read behind the lines, they contain a strong message. For example, the pictures that consist of 5 eggs lined up may seem like a normal photograph, however, if you look closer, the pictures display confusion about the reproductive process of chicken, and they contain words that are written in two languages. She wants to raise awareness to the public that dominant society punishes Mexican-American youth's bicultural identity.

Hi Yurica,
ReplyDeleteI'm glad that you took the opportunity to learn about the Chicanx community. I glad that you were able to learn a lot about many Chicana artist, which I did too. Not only that, but I'm sure you also were able to learn that Asians are also a minority as well as Latinos. I agree with you that in a way, we both suffer discrimination. I hope you enjoyed learning about the Chicanx community.
I agree with Jackie. I feel it is important to show how Chicanx community has often been neglected and oppressed. The artists we learned about through lectures and the presentations are a crucial part to let our Chicanx story known! I'm glad that you were able to connect themes in this class to other events.
