I have learned a lot from Professor Alma over this quarter. I was nervous taking this class since I do not have much knowledge about Chicano culture or Chicano Art. I was happily surprised to have recognized some of the artwork and artist we discussed and studied over the quarter. There were a lot of time in class that we discussed major historical events that I had never heard about before. I am grateful for the ability to expand my education outside of my own culture and learn about things that are so important to come groups, yet oblivious to so many others.
I loved learning not only about the artists work, but also the artists. Studying their lives, biographies, and influences, made their art work that much more enjoyable to look at. I have a great appreciation for how many Chianca women are also activists in their community. The pride, passion, and grit that went into so many of the images we saw is what really stuck with me throughout the course. My artist, Margarita Cabrera, is included in the activist group. Her struggle against the bureaucracy to uphold her art was truly inspiring. Her sustainable, yet subtly strong approach to border patrol uniforms in her sculptures, showed her creativity and talent.
I also enjoyed the sketchbook project. I have a history with painting and it felt great to be able to express myself in a way I haven't for many years. I love art and this class made me appreciate the hobby I left behind. I am very proud of my artwork and the improvement I saw throughout the quarter.
Thank you Professor Lopez!
