Artist Presentation

Margarita Cabrera is the artist I am choosing for my presentation.  Margarita Cabrera is a Mexican-American artist who currently lives in El Paso, Texas. Her work is focused on political, social, and community issues. Her use of sculpture recognizes and communicates the problems with cultural identity, labor, violence, empowerment, and inclusively within the Chicano Movement. She mainly uses mediums including steel, copper, wood, ceramics, and fabric to make her sculptures. Cabrera has been at the center of numerous collaborative projects, bringing in her expertise on contemporary art practices, United States-Mexico relations, and indigenous Mexican folk art and craft relations. She is still making art today. Some of Cabrera’s goals are to create a social awareness, generate solutions, and inclusively empower all members of the community. She has a great history with sculptures reflecting her communities realities. Recently Cabrera has focused on collaborations where her art is transforming international and local communities. Her recent sculpture UPLIFT has been under harsh criticism from the local government and was taken down, surging a controversy around the artist. Cabrera has a true talent through communicating experience through art. Her work is colorful, powerful, and strong.
