Extra Credit

The image I chose as my inspiration included my mom. I have always seen la Virgen de Guadalupe growing up. Her imagery was plastered in my house. From the altar we have of her to the calendars my parents would get from la carniceria. Her story however was one I had never really heard as a child. I just knew her as a woman who held so much power and was to be respected especially because she was everywhere in my household. Every Sunday my parents would get flowers for her altar, and we would have candles around her.

When I think of women who have power I always think of my mom.
The picture I chose to represent is one of my mom when she was back in Mexico. I TRIED to do justice by not only my mom but La Virgen, and I included roses because that's an important element in the story. My mom to me has always been strong, and in a way she represents magic to me. I do not draw often, I cannot stress this enough, but I wanted to mold what I could of these two amazing figures to reimage the image of La Virgen. Ironically enough you can see La Virgen de Guadalupe in the image with my mom, it just goes to show how much this figure has existed/represented power in our lives.
