Week 4: Rasquache & Domesticana

Rasquachismo is an interesting word and although in class we learned it to signify the "underdog perspective - a view from los de abajo" I also learned that it has another meaning in my house! When speaking to my mom about this topic, she told me that rasquche is thought of 'raggaty' in which a person looks sloppy and not well put together. In some places, this word can be offensive to people. However, taking a deeper look into the meaning of rasquache, I learned that it's doing the most with what you have. I did not grow up with the biggest luxuries in the world. I had to make due with what I had, and learned that I can still do the most and be very resourceful, creative, and imaginative with what I have around me. I am glad to have this quality because when the time comes where I need to make a fire and don't have a lighter, I'll be able to make it out of sticks and stones, for example.

Domesticana' is also very similar to raquachismo but has a focus on gender. Domesticana' reflects on the Chicana Art and feminism. When women were not being represented through the struggles of rasquache, they made their own title and embraced domesticana'. I'd even say that being a domesticana' has "more value" because on top of the rasquache struggles males faced, domesticana's had to also face sexism. However, this is not just to highlight the struggles but to also show the love and affection domesticana's show to their communities, church, and families by giving back and taking care of them.
