Week 8: Artist Presentation

After having listened to the presentation on Monica Kim Garza, I began to gravitat and connect with her work. Garza’s background and upbringing has allowed her work to highlight women of color and those with full figures. Having grown up around strip clubs throughout her hometown of Atlanta, seeing nude and curvy women is more than common and not just from the perspective a man receiving a lap dance. Garza paints women performing acts that are common, mundane, and joy evoking while curvy brown women and in thongs or nothing at all.
One image that stood out to me was Hymfr (Hell Yeah Motherfuckn Right) a 2016 painting that depicts three nude women having a good time, on an inflatable, in the ocean waters. I was so quick to connect with this work because I can be displayed in a space that can be understood as an embrace of one's sexuality not justified by others. The title of the piece also complements the work by its direct and unapologetically existing tone. The phrase “hell yeah mother fuckin' right” is commonly said by those who have made a point of fact and someone else just repeated or acted the person’s wants. Sometimes, the phrase can be interpreted as a rude way of thanking someone, however, in the image, the women in the painting are not asking to exist they are enjoying their existence regardless of who is around. The godly large jewelry each woman is wearing also illustrates the sense of well established and accomplished women, through this the artist is showing appreciation for women, women of color, and the physical female form.
