Week 7: Graffiti is Art

In the reading titled “Graffiti is Art”, Charles Borjorquez explains how his love for graffiti art came to be. He says the good things about graffiti art as well as misconstrued ideas that make people think it is a bad thing. The people who tend to not like it see it as vandalism and destruction to property that is illegal. The word “tagging” can sometimes be mixed up with graffiti as he explains. Many people also see it as something bad as it appears in many neighborhoods with gangs since they use it to write their names or other affiliations.

Overall Borjorquez explains the good and the bad when it comes to graffiti. He explains how depending on where you live graffiti may be a more normalized thing where it is not covered up as much as in other neighborhoods. He uses his own identity and experiences in Los Angeles growing up surrounded by graffiti to explain how graffiti is not just about destroying or vandalizing communities and neighborhoods. I felt that it was important how he discussed that not only uneducated people are engaging in graffiti but also educated people who have gone to college. He talks about how graffiti back then is different compared to the way we see graffiti art in the media and it is more mainstream than it used to be. Chaz explains graffiti in an elegant way that helps the reader understand it is a form of art that can be powerful amongst a group of people who can all contribute to a certain piece.

  1. Hi Adrianna I also think its important to emphasize that multiple people engage or practice the Graffiti Arts.It is often seen as a practice that isnt seen as a fine art or for uneducated people but now that more people engage in this practice then more people are taking it seriously . Hopefully as time advances more people accept graffiti art as a serious practice in the artworld.
