Hello everyone my name is Brenda Barrios I’m a First-Generation Mexican American student With a disability. I’m majoring in Art and minoring in Art Education and Art history. My pronouns are she/her/ they, I’m a Los Angeles native and born and raised in Pasadena. I’m an Artists and enjoy all types of art-making I am multidisciplinary and have and a passion for creating! My art entails working with contemporary social justice my health and personal experiences. I wanted to take this class because I have an interest in women artists because I am a women artist and I feel there aren’t courses discussing artists who are women. Recently in the summer, I have been extremely busy and been working on four jobs that are art-related I’m hoping to prove that the starving artist’s stereotype doesn’t always have to be the case and people can finally achieve it. I also started an art club called the Art Students collective if anyone would want to join it’s open to any major in order to help or find resources.
In the reading, “why have there been no great women artist” which I’ve read a couple of times and each time I gain something different. I view myself as equal to male artists but the institutions don’t always view women artists that way and also not always taken as credible. Historically women artists have been overshadowed and when presented have been referred to as wives of so and so.
