Gonzalez, Annette (Week 9: Presentations)

The presentations regarding the chicana artists that we have worked on throughout the quarter continued this week. They were all very engaging and I learned more about the various artists that make up this field and continuously contribute to it with their creative works. The latinx artist that caught my attention was Angelica Becerra. She is from San Juan de Los Lagos Jalisco, Mexico and made the journey to Los Angeles with her family at the young age of ten as an immigrant. She had a great influence on art by her family in Mexico, her grandfather and aunt contributed to this greatly as they were both artists themselves, her grandfather was a carpenter who worked with wood to create different geometric works and her aunt: Elvira, was a painter. When she moved from Mexico to California, she used art as a form to carry herself and get through the difficult times she experienced as she adjusted to the new way of life and differences that existed now as she lived in Los Angeles. She received her Bachelor Degree in Chicanx and Latinx Studies in the year of 2012. She continued expanding her education and received her Masters In Chicanx Studies in 2014. In 2020, Becerra received her Ph. D. in Chicanx Studies at the University of California, Los Angeles.  Becerra’s work consists of prints that consist of portraits of People of Color and different significant figures that might not have been taught in a classroom. The incorporation of these specific people is what I really liked about her work and alongside with their portrait, Becerra includes a quote of the person displayed in the portraits which gives context and insight into the person and reinforces their message transmitted through the quote.
