Hey class! Out of all the presentations last week, our classmate Helena Alcala's presentation really stood out to me. She did a great job on her presentation on Carmen Linares-Kalo. The artist's work really caught my eye. I liked her murals a lot. Carmen Linares-Kalo is a Chicana public muralist and painter based in San Diego. She is successful in both areas. She has many paintings in many museums. One of the facts that surprised me was that one of her pieces that was dedicated to the Kumeyaay people(a small nation) took 26 years worth of planning and she finally got it done. It was presented on the 50th anniversary of the Chicano Park in San Diego and many people gathered to celebrate it. The process of painting it took around two weeks and it was all worth the long wait. This artist caught my eye with her art because when I used to go to high school in East LA, I would come across many murals on the walls and always wondered how much work they put in to get these end results. When I looked at them I would be amazed and it was kinda hard to believe that a regular person did this and not like you know printed on there or something. I believe that painting on a canvas would be way easier than doing a mural because like you don't go up the ladders and then go check it out then come back up and so on. I tried to do a bit of research on the artist after the presentation and didn't really find much. I couldn't even find the images that were on the presentations. I personally believe that this artist for sure needs more recognition than she has right now and a wikipedia page would do her some good.
