Week 9

For last week's presentations, it was exciting to see all the painters, especially because I would consider myself a painter as well. Once again it was hard to choose just one artist to reflect on since they are all so good. However, I have decided to reflect upon the Chicana artist Sand One presented by Mara Higuera. What drew me into her art was her distinct style and storytelling. Her dolls are just stunning and so playful. They are definitely something I would have loved to see as a child. I also loved how each doll has its own backstory. It adds depth to her work as well as makes her work more relatable and approachable. I am sure many of us could relate to a doll or two. I was also in complete shock at how Sand One got scammed at the beginning of her art career. I thought it was really sad to hear about how her doll painting was not only stolen but also prominently displayed in a restaurant without any compensation or even credit. This is truly an artists' worst nightmare, to have their work exploited and taken from them. I couldn't help but wonder if there were either some misogyny or racist undermarks that lead to this happening in the first place since it is quite common for women of color to be taken advantage of.
