Week 10 Extra Credit Victor Payan & Pocha Pena (Brenda Barrios)

Victor Payan explains the term poncho is now something that is embraced and embraces misfits. And explains that Pocho is almost feeling as though he’s on the outside. Payan has worked in documentaries and was a writer. And Payan talks a bit about Chicano artists and history. His work includes new expression media culture. The work Payan and Pocha Pena explains the history and what’s missing there is no evidence of the lived culture and discusses how museums don’t show that and san Diego being close to Mexico was no one there was Latine or speak Spanish. And they go back discussing towards the 1870s and research back further. And also discusses the history of areas and how California was diverse and wild and fun and discusses after 1848 and there is fewer places where latine people are in leadership. They create works that are graphic arts film festivals posters and creative conversations and performances. Also brings internal colonization that is internal to your collin and also staying a mindset “never having to say you're sorry: which I liked this mindset. Pocha Pena talks about cultural appropriation “creating the inclusion of illusion” and Pena then wanted to be a” misfit so the vision would not be clouded by that bs”. Pena discusses systems and they are only recognized in other systems. And plan for long-term intergenerational programs so their systems would survive. How to apply art to activism is to tell a story, unearthing and revealing.

Reflection: I think it's interesting because these topics are what should be critiqued why there isn’t more knowledge or encouragement to learn about who was before us. We have many streets using Spanish names and we almost ignore them and don’t discuss them and I feel that we should be more acknowledged. I liked hearing about art activism because I do talk about my culture because I think it does deserve recognition attention. I know personally people don’t talk about it or care to learn but I still want to bring it into space because to me it's important.
