Presentation Artist Review

An artist from our peer presentations that caught my eye was New York-based artist, Lady Pink! The New York-raised Ecuador born artist had work that was very eye-catching. Additionally, from the information shared, I became knowledgeable that she would often compete with men from the graffiti community and continued to do so until she became successful. Considering that the hip-hop subculture is prominent in today's society, she continues to produce work that is very significant to the community. Considering her success as can be seen through previous exhibitions in the Whitney Museum, the MET in New York City, Brooklyn Museum, and Groningen Museum of Holland, she has created a following within women that look up to her work as a female graffiti artist. Although she holds a high reputation in the graffiti world, she is also very involved in the community as she holds workshops for teens which I think is very beautiful because she assists underrepresented teens in creating work and creating space for self-expression which is crucial in this particular point in time. Even more powerful, is that she has established herself within a very estimated profession, fine art, where various collectors have collected her work which in my opinion challenges the notions of gender, race, and accessibility and makes me feel very happy that a woman of color is the one profiting from wealthy collectors. After hearing this presentation, I became inspired and would like to continue learning about graffiti art but looking specifically at self-identifying women graffiti art!
